BOMBANANA! Tips and Tricks
The beginner guide teaches you the rules; this page teaches you to stop blowing up. BOMBANANA! punishes communication, not logic — these are the habits that separate clean runs from collective screaming.
Communication Tips
- Sound boring. A good defusal team sounds robotic: module name, position, details, manual answer, repeat-back, confirm, input. Adjectives cost seconds.
- Build a gesture dictionary before round one: yes, no, wait, repeat, go-back, and digits 0–9. Expand it only when you know what caused a miss — do not invent ten gestures before the first module.
- Numpad-map directions: 2 = down, 4 = left, 6 = right, 8 = up. Pre-assign numbers to colors too.
- Left and right are always the Blind Monkey left and right. The hands on the bomb are the only perspective that matters once the relay ends.
- Repeat-back is non-negotiable. Nobody cuts, presses, types or flips until the instruction has been repeated once. The repeat is the error check, not wasted time.
- The Mute asks the questions. Targeted yes/no questions ("do you see a red LED?") are faster than open-ended descriptions — a nod costs a second, a wrong branch costs the bomb.
- The Deaf filters. Not everything visible on the bomb matters. Learning what to report and what to skip is the Deaf core skill.
Execution Tips
- Simplest module first. Clearing a quick Cable or Direction panel early takes timer pressure off the team.
- Fresh packets only. Input: "Cable. Three. Green light. Green, Blue, Yellow." Answer: "Yellow. Third from the left." Never let a description color masquerade as the target.
- Treat every successful input as a checkpoint. Did the module clear? If yes, drop its values. If no, re-read the panel before using another answer. Stale answers kill more runs than slow lookups.
- Full stop after any mistake. Panic inputs stack errors faster than calm retries. Re-read the whole module from scratch — a wrong input can change the LED, the number or the stage.
- Respect the Calculator two-stage rule. Raw result advances the module; the new LED plus odd/even finishes it. If the result was accepted and the panel is still active, never re-enter the same number.
- Watch for Chaos interruptions. The rising Chaos slider keeps creeping up while you solve. Stabilize the danger first, then return to the defusal panel and confirm its current state before trusting an older answer.
Team Improvement Tips
- Switch roles every few rounds. The former Blind sees the puzzle they kept failing from the direct perspective; the former Mute finally sees what their gestures looked like. Roadblocks dissolve fast.
- Review after explosions, not just wins. Ask one question: where did the information stop being useful? That separates a puzzle problem from a communication problem — and they need different fixes.
- Protect the Blind Monkey from overload. The Blind is racing the clock and (in Chaos rounds) keeping mechanisms from overheating. Short, confirmed instructions beat fast, sloppy ones.
High-Frequency Mistake Checklist
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Skipping the module name and position | Universal callout, every time |
| "Left" meaning two different things | Blind-perspective rule, locked in setup |
| Cutting on the target color without a position | Always translate to "Nth from the left" |
| Pressing ENTER on Switch with an unresolved 50/50 | Confirm every switch; use the go-back signal |
| Reusing an answer after the panel changed | Checkpoint habit: re-read after every input |
| The Blind guessing a missing detail | Say "unknown" and re-scan instead |
